A blog by Eve Kirby – EAL Co-ordinator for two schools in Gloucester: Hatherley Infant School & Nursery and St James Church of England Junior School.

We created a survival language fan to support our new to English new arrivals in school, of which we have had a lot this year! The class teacher, teaching assistant and new student all have a fan, which they can use for all basic communication during the child’s first weeks at our school. The visuals are accompanied by sentences to ensure that the student, and adults, repeatedly practise the same grammatically correct sentences. Some children prefer not to use their survival language fan but, for others, it’s a lifeline.

Download your free multilingual communication fans in English, Pashto and Arabic, with thanks to Eve Kirby for creating and sharing.
