Better Bilingual & Bristol Primary Teaching School Alliance

Better Bilingual are delighted to be working in partnership with the BPTSA and delivered their first CPD to Initial Teacher Training Students on behalf of BPTSA on meeting the needs of EAL learners in the classroom on November 22nd 2017 at Whitehall Primary School.

From a number of educational settings across Bristol, the students’ diverse range of experiences of working with EAL learners was evident: some were from educational settings with high numbers of EAL pupils; others had no EAL pupils in their classes but were mindful that this would almost certainly change.  It was evident from their level of engagement that all were interested in developing their understanding of the needs of EAL learners and were highly committed to developing best practice for effective working with this cohort.

Better Bilingual hope that the knowledge and techniques shared during the CPD will enable attendees to provide for their EAL learners with a sound understanding of their needs and what works well to support their development of English language across the curriculum.

Research shows that CPD provision in the area of EAL is sparse, in particular for trainee teachers. It is a privilege to be working closely with the BPTSA to address this gap; please look out for future courses and do get in touch if you’d like to request bespoke CPD sessions.

Evaluation from Victoria Garrett (St Bonaventure’s RC Primary) describing the impact she has seen from attending the CPD sessions

“Attending the Better Bilingual courses gave me the confidence and knowledge I needed to apply strategies within the classroom at my school. They were full of practical ideas and promoted equality and a real sense of what inclusive education should look like.” – Victoria Garrett
