Better Bilingual EAL Network Meeting (BANES)
Tuesday 13th November 2018 – Cotham School

The second Better Bilingual EAL Network Meeting (BANES) took place on 13th November 2018 at Combe Down Primary, led by Catherine Brennan. This gathering was well attended by a range of education professionals from infant, primary and secondary schools as well as from the University of Bath and other educational organisations.

A huge thank you to all who attended, with special thanks to Xiao Lan Curdt-Christiansen for talking about her multilingual families project and to Antony Wainer for being such a great host and photographer too! It was encouraging to have such a range of roles and settings represented, leading to excellent networking and valuable discussions about EAL.

Local and National Updates were provided on a variety of events, research papers, policies and initiatives, all connected directly or indirectly to enhancing the provision for learners with EAL (English as an additional language); for full details, see the Bristol version of this article.

The main theme was Valuing and Using First Languages in Schools & Settings which generated some lively group discussions on successes, barriers and solutions. If you would like to see notes from these, please email us. We would be delighted to hear how you are going to action any ideas from the meeting – on any EAL theme – so please do keep us posted!

Ideas for future network meetings were noted and feedback can be seen below. If you would like to present on a theme or host in your school/setting, do drop us an email – thank you. We look forward to seeing you at the next Better Bilingual EAL Network Meeting (BANES) – please keep an eye on the website and Twitter for date and venue announcements!
